The “isothermal” compressibility of active matter

چکیده

We demonstrate that the mechanically defined “isothermal” compressibility behaves as a thermodynamic-like response function for suspensions of active Brownian particles. The computed from pressure—a combination collision and unique swim pressures—is capable predicting critical point motility induced phase separation, expected mechanical stability criterion. relate this definition to static structure factor via an form thermodynamic equation find two be equivalent, would case equilibrium systems. This equivalence indicates like function, even when activity is large. Finally, we discuss importance interface defining chemical potential. Previous definitions potential are shown accurate above but breakdown in coexistence region. Inclusion pressure suggests essential determining behavior.

Resolving vibrational and structural contributions to isothermal compressibility

The well-known and general ‘‘compressibility theorem’’ for pure substances relates kT 52(] ln V/]p)N,T to a spatial integral involving the pair correlation function g . The isochoric inherent structure formalism for condensed phases separates g (2) into two fundamentally distinct contributions: a generally anharmonic vibrational part, and a structural relaxation part. Only the former determines...

Compressibility of jammed and glassy matter

The small wavenumber region of the static structure factor, S(k), for monodisperse systems and the compressibility factor, θ(k), for bidisperse mixtures, are investigated for jammed packings of frictionless spheres. Both S(k) and θ(k) exhibit a linear dependence on wavenumber k at small values of k that is not only independent of force model, but also persists away from the jamming transition. ...

THE EFFECT OF VOLATILE MATTER OF NON-COKING COAL ON THE REDUCTION OF IRON OXIDE AT NON-ISOTHERMAL CONDITION

The volatile matter of non-coking coal was used for the reduction of hematite in argon atmosphere at nonisothermal condition. A thermal gravimeter furnace enable to use an 80 mm-height crucible was designed for the experiments to measure the weight changes of about 10 grams samples. A two-layered array of coal and alumina and four-layered array of iron oxide, alumina, coal and alumina was u...

Precise determination of the isothermal compressibility of mercury at 20 " C and 192 bar

The isothermal compressibility of mercury at 20 "C and 192 bar has been determined with an accuracy estimated at k 0.4 %, which represents a considerable increase in accuracy over previous determinations. The value obtained is within 0.3% of that derived from the velocity of sound by Davis and Gordon, although the accuracy claimed for the latter was only k 0.8 %. 1. Introduction In a companion ...

Compressibility of nuclear matter from shell effects in nuclei

The compressibility of nuclear matter has received significant attention in the last decade and a variety of approaches have been employed to extract this fundamental property of matter. Recently, significant differences have emerged between the results of relativistic and non-relativistic calculations of breathing mode giant monopole resonance (GMR). This is due to a lack of understanding of t...
